Homage to Canaletto

Homage to Canaletto

watercolor on paper...NFS

The first Italian Renaissance painting I saw in the flesh was by Canaletto, a giant masterpiece of an Italian city, piazza, and the harbor. I did this small tribute in my own way, with calligraphic watercolor.

There is an excellent Canaletto in the Dallas Museum of Art set in Venice looking North to St Michelle. Very great...

When I worked at the Ga Museum of Art on the U of GA campus, they had a Canaletto on loan from Italy for a couple of years. It was huge, and I was amazed - then I got a book of his and saw that he had hundreds of paintings! HOW?? It looked like he painted the architecture with a needle and the canvas was about 10 feet wide.

Unreal.. some people truly are Little Gods! Here I tried to capture a piece of a scene of his without the detail but with all the motion. Obviously calligraphic and almost expressionist..
